Bernice Carver Scholarship of Hope

This scholarship is available to a senior, Whitley County resident graduating from Columbia City, Churubusco or Whitko High School, in the top third of their class with a 3.2 (or above) grade point average. Applicants should have aspirations for a career in the field of nursing, teaching or science and plan to attend an Indiana college or university (public or private) in pursuit of a 4-year baccalaureate degree.

The Scholarship of Hope was established by the family of Don and Barbara Frey to honor Barbara's aunt, Bernice Carver, one of Columbia City's most dedicated and beloved educators. A 1925 graduate of Columbia City High School, Miss Carver earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Oxford College for Women, Miama University in 1929 and her Master's degree from Indiana University in 1937. She went on to become a tireless and respected educator of mathematics and world history for the next four decades until she retired in 1970.

Applicants should have aspirations for a career in the field of nursing, teaching, or science and plan to attened an Indiana college or university (public or private) in pursuit of a 4-year baccalaureate degree. Above all, the Bernice Carver Scholarship of Hope will be awarded to a student who is a good citizen witha quest for knowledge, the ambition to seek it, and desire to share that knowledge with others - all traits that best reflected Miss Carver's admirable character and zest for life.
